Kinetic Technologies Releases Two Low-Resistance, Reverse-blocking, Slew-rate Controlled, Power Saving Load Switches

San Jose, Calif. November 5, 2016 – Kinetic Technologies, a high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductor company focused on developing power management solutions for computing, consumer, industrial, and communications markets, today introduced the KTS1601 and KTS1605, reverse-blocking, slew-rate controlled load switches with extremely low on-resistance.  The KTS1601 and KTS1605 are ideal for use in single cell Lithium-ion battery-based equipment, including mobile phones, Smartphones, Tablets, wearables and other portable devices or any appliance operated from a fixed 3.3V or 5V supply, such as HDD or SSD.

The KTS1601 and KTS1605 are the first generation of slew-rate controlled load switches products from Kinetic, significantly improving the efficiency in battery powered electronics.  The KTS1601 and KTS1605 power saving load switches are inserted between the battery or supply voltage and a load, and only turned on when the load is required by the system, thereby minimizing the power drain. The KTS1601 and KTS1605 features a controlled soft-on slew rate of typical 2.7ms that limits the inrush current for designs with heavy capacitive loads and minimizes any resulting voltage droop at the power rails.

With an operating voltage range from 1.5V to 5.5V, the KTS1601 and KTS1605 features the lowest on-resistance, and quiescent current of any similar packaged device on the market today. At an input voltage of 3.3V, the KTS1601 and KTS1605 features 24m and 13.4m respectively, providing a low IN to OUT voltage drop, maximising the voltage to the load. Both products are reverse-blocking when OFF, ensuring there are no discharge paths from OUT to IN, should a load be powered from a dual supply. The KTS1601 can operate up to a continuous current of 2A and the KTS1605, 5A.

With more and more functions being added to portable products, the battery capacity is struggling to meet the consumers expected operating time,” said Phil Dewsbury, Senior Director of Product Marketing at Kinetic Technologies. “With operating currents of these functions approaching their minimum, designers must look elsewhere to extend the battery life. The KTS1601 and KTS1605 load switches, provide an additional means to save power, by shutting down, un-used functions in a Smartphone or other portable product, without compromising the reliability or operating parameters of the system.”

The KTS1601 and KTS1605 also features an internal pull-down resistor on the enable pin to ensure the device remains off, should the input enable be allowed to float. The KTS1601 and KTS1605 also have an active pull-down option, that is connected between the output and ground, to discharge any residual load voltage at the output, when the switch is off.

Both devices include over-temperature protection, and ESD compliance at the input to IEC61000-4-2 level 4 of 8kV Contact Discharge and 15kV Air Discharge and are rated over the -40 degree C to +85 degree C temperature range. The KTS1601 is supplied in a WLCSP-4, 1.0 x 1.0mm, while the KTS1605 is supplied in a WLCSP-6, 1.0mm x 1.5mm, both RoHS and Green Compliant packages.

Kinetic Technologies Releases Two Surge Protected, Single Input, Dual Output Load Switches with OVP

San Jose, Calif. September 5, 2016 – Kinetic Technologies, a high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductor company focused on developing power management solutions for computing, consumer, industrial, and communications markets, today introduced the KTS1678 and KTS1679-1, both single input, dual output, surge protected, load switches with selectable OVP.  The KTS1678 and KTS1679-1 are specifically designed for routing VBUS power to provide alternative functions in mid-to-high end Smartphones or Tablets.

Both the KTS1678 and KTS1679-1 consist of two very low resistance power switches configured as single input, dual output, change-over switch. The input to both switches is protected against VBUS surge voltages of up to 100V, and is also protected against over-voltage, on both the VBUS to OUT and VBUS to SYS paths, providing protection to downstream components from abnormal input conditions. The main switch (VBUS to OUT) features a unidirectional, 23m, active-LOW enabled 3.5A rated MOSFET, while the secondary switch (VBUS to SYS) is a reverse-blocking, 30m, active-HIGH enabled, 6.0A rated MOSFET. Both input switches are rated up to a maximum of 28V. The KTS1678 has a fixed OVP trip point of 13.9V 400mV for the VBUS to OUT switch, with an OVP trip point of 5.25V 250mV for VBUS to SYS switch. The KTS1679-1, replaces the SHDN pin (used to conserve power) with a SEL pin, giving the user the option to either select the VBUS to OUT OVP trip point to 10.4V 300mV by allowing the SEL pin to float or to 5.8V 200mV by tying the SEL pin to GND. This allows compatibility with many of the fast charging schemes, that use higher charging voltages. The VBUS to BAT OVP remains fixed at 5.8V 400mV.

When VBUS is greater than 2.7V, the KTS1678 POK LDO provides an always ON power source, regardless of the OVLO, EN1 and EN2 state, to power downstream components permitting operation without an installed battery.  In the KTS1679, the POK LDO is replaced by a battery voltage sense function (SNS), that switches off the charging current to the battery, if the battery voltage exceeds its maximum rating.

The introduction of the Type-C USB connector has provided Smartphone manufacturers with both an opportunity and a challenge said Phil Dewsbury, Senior Director of Product Marketing at Kinetic Technologies, while the Type-C connector offers the ability to handle a higher charging current, those manufacturers previously using an un-committed pin on the Micro-USB connector for test purposes, have to look for an alternative solution. The KTS1678 offers those manufacturers the opportunity to use the VBUS pin to directly route the tester to the system board, bypassing the integrated battery charger. Alternatively, the KTS1679-1 allows manufacturers using high current, direct charging adapters to directly access the battery terminals, safe in the knowledge that any over-charge will be detected by the integrated OVP circuitry.

The KTS1678 and KTS1679-1 are supplied in a WLCSP-28, 2.96 x 1.67mm, RoHS and Green Compliant packages and are rated over the -40 degree C to +85 degree C temperature range.

Kinetic Technologies Releases Over-Voltage Protected, Slew-rate controlled, Load Switches

San Jose, Calif. August 28, 2016 – Kinetic Technologies, a high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductor company focused on developing power management solutions for computing, consumer, industrial, and communications markets, today introduced the KTS1670 and KTS1671, slew-rate controlled load switches with over-voltage protection to protect battery operated systems from malfunctions due to charger faults.  The KTS1670 and KTS1671 are ideal for use in single cell Lithium-ion battery-based equipment, including mobile phones, Smartphones, Tablets, wearables and other portable devices for charging currents up to 3A.

The KTS1670 and KTS1671 are the latest in a family of Power Interface products from Kinetic, targeted to significantly increase safety and reliability in battery powered electronics.  The KTS1670 and KTS1671 are inserted between the power supply or charger source and the load to be protected. The over-voltage protection (OVP) switch features an ultra-low 60mΩ (typical) on-resistance MOSFET and protects low-voltage systems against voltage faults up to +28VDC. If the input voltage exceeds the overvoltage threshold, the internal MOSFET reacts within typically 100ns and is turned off to prevent damage to any downstream components connected to the output of the device. An 18ms debounce time built into the device delays the internal MOSFET turn on time to avoid false turn on due to faulty connectors or line perturbations.

The overvoltage protection threshold can be externally programmed with an optional resistor divider to set a threshold between 4V and 20V. With the OVLO input pin tied to GND (or below the external OVLO select voltage), the KTS1670 and KTS1671 automatically selects the internal OVLO threshold. The internal overvoltage threshold of the KTS1670 is preset to 6.05V typical and the KTS1671 preset to 6.15V for use with standard 5V adapter chargers or USB charging ports.  The KTS1670 is specifically targeted for adjustable applications, where a tighter voltage tolerance is required.

The surge requirements for portable products, being used in India and SE Asia, have now increased to such a level, that integrating the surge protection with OVP is not commercially viable۝ said Phil Dewsbury, Senior Director of Product Marketing at Kinetic Technologies. The KTS1670 and KTS1671 products, in conjunction with an external TVS diode, provide a low-cost input protection scheme, that can ensure that down-stream electronics are not damaged by either a high-voltage surge or an incorrect adapter charger being used۝.

The devices support a voltage input range of 2.5V to +28V, include over-temperature protection, over-voltage protection, and automatic recovery when the fault conditions are removed. Each of the devices are available in an extremely small 6-pin WLCSP package. The devices are rated over the -40 degree C to +85 degree C temperature range.

Key Features of KTS1670/1671

  • Operation up to +28V input
  • Enhanced ESD protection on VBUS compliant with IEC61000 4-2 (Level 4)
    • 8kV Contact Discharge
    • 15kV Air Dicharge
  • Fixed or adjustable Over-voltage protection

Kinetic Technologies Releases Surge Protected Load Switches with Over-voltage Protection

Sunnyvale, Calif. November 5, 2014 – Kinetic Technologies, a high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductor company focused on developing power management solutions for computing, consumer, industrial, and communications markets, today introduced the KTS1681 and KTS1682, surge protected load switches with over-voltage protection to protect battery operated systems from malfunctions due to high voltage surge pulses and charger faults.  The KTS1681 and KTS1682 are ideal for use in single cell Lithium-ion battery-based equipment, including mobile phones, Smartphones, Tablets, wearables and other portable devices.

The KTS1681 and KTS1682 are the latest generation of Power Interface products from Kinetic, significantly increasing safety and reliability in battery powered electronics.  The KTS1681 and KTS1682 are inserted between the power supply or charger source and the load to be protected. The over-voltage protection (OVP) switch features an ultra-low 38m (typical) on-resistance MOSFET and protects low-voltage systems against voltage faults up to +28VDC. An internal clamp also protects the device from input surge transients up to 100V. If the input voltage exceeds the overvoltage threshold, the internal MOSFET is turned off to prevent damage to any downstream components connected to the output of the device. A 15ms debounce time built into the device delays the internal MOSFET turn on time to avoid false turn on due to faulty connectors. The overvoltage protection threshold can be externally programmed with an optional resistor divider to set a threshold between 4V and 22V. With the OVLO input pin tied to GND (or below the external OVLO select voltage), the KTS1681 and KTS1682 automatically selects the internal OVLO threshold. The internal overvoltage threshold of the KTS1681 is preset to 5.95V typical for use with standard 5V adapter chargers or USB charging ports, while the KTS1682 is set to 9.98V typical for use in products that feature fast charging schemes or use a 2-cell battery.

“With the plethora of adapter chargers on the market today, all featuring a USB mini- or micro plug, mistakes can be made and incompatible chargers may be inadvertently used causing irreparable damage to the appliance,” said Phil Dewsbury, Senior Director of Product Marketing at Kinetic Technologies. “The KTS1681 and KTS1682 products, detect if the wrong voltage charger is used, breaking the connection in less than 100ns to any downstream components, protecting the more sensitive components. In addition, the KTS1681 and KTS1682 can also protect equipment from power line surges, removing the need to use large and bulky TVS diodes.”

The KTS1681 and KTS1682 also features a voltage detect function that provides the system with a few milliamps of current, regardless of the condition of the input voltage. This allows the system to restart in the event that the battery is completely discharged and cannot provide sufficient power to operate the system.

The devices support a voltage input range of 2.5V to +28V, include over-temperature protection, over-voltage protection, surge protection and automatic recovery when the fault conditions are removed. Each of the devices are available in a 12-pin WLCSP package. The devices are rated over the -40 degree C to +85 degree C temperature range.

Key Features of KTS1681/1682

  • Operation up to +28V input
  • Surge protection 100V to IEC61000 4-5
  • Enhanced ESD protection on VBUS compliant with IEC61000 4-2 (Level 4)
  • Fixed or adjustable Over-voltage protection
  • Ultra-low 38m resistance
  • VDET function
  • Small WLCSP12 package

Kinetic Technologies Releases High Efficiency LED Driver for Tablets

Sunnyvale, Calif. September 9, 2014 – Kinetic Technologies, a high-performance analog and mixed-signal semiconductor company focused on developing power management solutions for computing, consumer, industrial, and communications markets, today introduced the KTD3156, a 6 channel LED backlight driver featuring PWM-Controlled, Mixed-Mode Dimming.  The KTD3156 is ideal for use in single cell Lithium-ion battery-based equipment, including Portable DVD Players, Notebooks, Netbooks, but specifically high resolution LCD displays in Tablets.

The KTD3156 is one of the most advanced, and full-featured LED backlight drivers in the market, specifically targeted at Tablet LCD displays. As one of the many backlight products from Kinetic Technologies۪ Display & Lighting Product Line, the KTD3156 provides an extremely wide dimming ratio necessary in today۪s high definition tablet displays.

The KTD3156 is the ideal power solution for LED backlighting in medium to large size LCD panels. It is a highly integrated step-up DC-DC converter with input voltage from 2.7V to 5.5V, accommodating 1-cell lithium ion batteries or 5V supply. KTD3156 integrates a 40V power MOSFET as well as six current sinks, which results in a simpler and smaller solution with fewer external components. High switching frequency allows the use of a smaller inductor and capacitor to further reduce the solution size. Each of the six current sinks regulates up to 30mA. With a 40V rated output, each string of the boost can connect up to 10 LEDs in series, for a total of 60 LEDs.

Featuring mixed-mode dimming, the KTD3156 switches between PWM dimming at a low dimming duty cycle and analog (DC current) dimming at high dimming duty cycles to increase the total power efficiency. The transition point of these two modes is programmable to 12.5% or 25% PWM duty cycle. The PWM dimming mode۪s output PWM dimming frequency can be programmed to fixed 22kHz or following input PWM dimming frequency. For fixed 22kHz output PWM dimming, phase shift function is implemented among these six channels to further lower the input current ripple and output voltage ripple.

“As tablet display resolution increases, consumers are demanding wider backlight dynamic dimming range for the best user experience, and at the same time maintaining high efficiency with minimal LED color-shift,” said Erik Ogren, Director of Marketing at Kinetic Technologies. “The KTD3156 achieves this by the combination of both analog and PWM dimming together with handling very low duty-cycles at high efficiency.”

Various protection features are built into KTD3156, including cycle-by-cycle input current limit protection, output over-voltage protection, LED fault (open or short) protection and thermal shutdown protection. The leakage current in shutdown mode is 0.1A. KTD3156 is available in a RoHS and Green compliant 16-lead 3 x 3 x 0.75mm ThinQFN or 16-lead 1.65mm x 1.65mm WLCSP package.
